E-Verify Your Employees
Providers are reminded that E-Verify is a fast, free and easy-to-use online database provided by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to ensure employers have a legal workforce.
The RECLAIM NC Act (S.L. 2013-418; HB 786) prohibits the State, counties, cities and certain other governmental units of North Carolina from entering into certain contracts if the contractor or that contractor’s subcontractors are not compliant with the E-Verify law. This means contractors and subcontractors must use E-Verify for their employees to the extent the law applies to them. There are exceptions in North Carolina for employers with less than 25 employees in this State, and “employee” is currently defined to exclude individuals whose term of employment is less than nine months in a calendar year. There are also exceptions for some types of contracts. Check with your Human Resources staff and legal counsel to ensure you are compliant with the North Carolina E-Verify laws– and therefore compliant under your contract(s) with Partners.
Employers can also learn more about E-Verify at www.uscis.gov/e-verify or by calling 888-464-4218. Again, it is free and easy, so regardless, it is a best practice.
